Common Plumbing Problems

Gurgling Drains

Air gets stuck in pipes sometimes, or a blockage starts forming, and that stops water from flowing the way it should. You’ll usually hear gurgling or bubbling when the water is trying to squeeze past something that’s in the way.

Common Signs

Gurgling sinks
Slow drainage
Bubbling toilet
Bad drain smells

Sewage Smells

Drains that smell unpleasant are almost always down to waste sitting in the pipes, not nearly enough airflow, or something partially blocking the pipes up. You’ll tend to notice it most around bathrooms, kitchens, and floor drains.

Common Signs

Rotten egg smell
Floor drain odour
Bathroom smell
Kitchen drain smell

Low Water Pressure

If your taps or shower aren’t putting out much water, it’s probably a blockage, something wrong with the pipes themselves, or an issue with the supply coming into your property. Occasionally it’s just one tap playing up; other times it’s the whole house.

Common Signs

Weak shower flow
Slow tap flow
Inconsistent pressure
Multiple fixtures affected

Noisy Pipes

When your plumbing starts making weird noises, it’s usually because of pressure jumping around, fittings that aren’t tight enough, or water not moving through the pipes like it should. You might hear anything from a loud bang to a high-pitched whistle.

Common Signs

Banging pipes
Rattling sounds
Whistling taps
Vibration noises

High Water Bills

If your water bill suddenly jumps up, there’s usually a hidden leak somewhere, a fixture that keeps running or water getting wasted without you noticing. A lot of the time you won’t pick up on the problem until the bill lands higher than it should be.

Common Signs

Sudden bill increase
Constant meter movement
Hidden leaks
Running water sound

Dripping Taps

A tap that keeps dripping is nearly always down to a worn washer, a cartridge that’s seen better days or internal parts that have stopped sealing properly. It might not seem like much, but even a slow drip adds up to a fair bit of wasted water over time.

Common Signs

Continuous dripping
Tap won’t stop
Water wastage
Worn washers

Running Toilets

A toilet keeps running when the bits inside it stop sealing or shutting off the water the way they’re meant to. The cistern just refills over and over, and you end up losing a surprising amount of water without really realising it’s happening.

Common Signs

Constant water flow
Running cistern noise
Tank not filling
High water usage

Discoloured Water

If your water’s coming out brown, yellow or a bit cloudy, it’s usually rust, sediment or something stirring up the supply or the pipes in your place. The odd bit of discolouration can happen now and then, but if it sticks around it’s worth getting looked at.

Common Signs

Brown water
Yellow tint
Cloudy water
Rust particles
